Uber and Lyft were both given business licences by the City of Vancouver Thursday afternoon, just hours after the province’s Passenger Transportation Board approved them to operate on the Lower Mainland.
Because the companies have business licences in Vancouver, trips originating within the city limits are the only ones available, according to licensing officials. People can travel to surrounding cities as long as they are picked up within Vancouver.
Other cities in the region have yet to make announcements regarding licensing.
There is no word yet on when people landing at Vancouver International Airport will be able to use one of the ride-hailing services to get them home from Richmond, for example.
We will work with our partners to intoduce ride-hailing at YVR once they are officially ready to operate. We’ll share more details soon.
