Earthquake off Vancouver Island felt around Lower Mainland

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — An earthquake off Vancouver Island has been detected and was felt around the Lower Mainland Friday afternoon.

The quake near Bamfield was recorded at 4.4 around 1:35 p.m. At a relatively shallow depth of just under five kilometers, the quake was strong enough to be felt in parts of Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Coquitlam, and Ladner.

One caller into NEWS 1130 from Richmond says he felt his chair shift.

“I thought it was a truck going by,” Philip Steiner says, before seeing other reports on social media.

A woman in Guilford tells NEWS 1130 she felt the shaking for a full ten seconds.

So far there are no reports of anyone being hurt or any damage.

There is no tsunami threat at this time.

In December, at least nine earthquakes over the period of three days rattled off the coast of Vancouver Island. However, a seismologist said it wasn’t a time to panic, but prepare.
