Uber not backing down, asks court to stop fines for drivers in Surrey

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Uber claims Surrey is bullying its drivers and asks the B.C. Supreme Court to issue an injunction to stop the city’s approach.

The head of Uber’s Western Canada division, Michael Van Hemmen, says Surrey doesn’t have a business licence for the company to purchase but drivers are still being fined.

“This is a situation that is incredibly unfortunate and we are going to court to ensure that the mayor [and] that the city stops issuing illegal fines,” he says.

In the meantime, Van Hemmen says Uber will continue offering rides in Surrey, despite the threat of tickets because the city doesn’t have the authority to stop them.

“Even if there were a business licence, the mayor has explicitly said that one will not be provided to Uber. Those are the facts we are bringing to the court,” he says.

Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum promised to continue issuing $500 tickets for Uber drivers operating in the city.

So far, Vancouver is the only municipality to create a business licence for ride-hailing.
