Rain leads to mudslides in White Rock, puts train service between U.S. on hold

WHITE ROCK (NEWS 1130) — Several mudslides in White Rock have caused passenger train services to be put on hold throughout the weekend.

According to Gus Melonas, who is with BNSF Railway in Seattle, several days of heavy rainfall is to blame.

“Day after day of rainfall that we’re facing in Washington state but also in Canada, the rail line has been impacted north of White Rock,” Melonas says. “As a result, we have had some mud slide from the slopes.”

Crews have been working since Friday night and will remain on the scene this weekend to clean up the mess.

“We had two large slides [Friday], 30 feet long, 5 feet deep. And we have track equipment, cranes on the rail, removing the debris,” Melonas tells NEWS 1130.

“Through the night, we had additional smaller slides where some trees, mud, rocks slid from the slopes.”

Melonas says all Amtrak travel from Vancouver to Bellingham will be cancelled until at least Monday morning.
