City of Surrey ‘absolutely’ continuing to fine Uber drivers: councillor

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Despite an imminent court challenge and in the wake of the mayor supporting a regional ride-sharing licence–one Surrey councillor says Uber drivers are still being ticketed by bylaw officers.
Coun. Brenda Locke says $500 fines are still being doled out to drivers operating in the municipality.
“They absolutely are. Hopefully the court injunction will tell them to stop,” she says. “Hopefully it will end then.”
BC Supreme Court is set to decide whether to issue an order forcing the city to stop handing out tickets Wednesday.

Locke says Surrey lacks adequate transit and penalizing ride-hailing operators is a waste of city resources.
“I think the ticketing is absolutely harsh and I don’t know why we’re doing it in Surrey. I don’t think it’s necessary.”
If the court doesn’t decide to stop the ticketing, Locke hopes council can put an end to it at their meeting next week.
“Then the City of Surrey can get on with things other than worrying about Uber. It’s going to be coming anyway, it’s provincial, and the public in Surrey absolutely want it.”
