Surrey RCMP won’t ticket Uber drivers

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — Surrey RCMP won’t be issuing any tickets to Uber drivers found operating without a business licence in the city.

Assistant Commissioner Brian Edwards says his officers will not be getting involved in the mayor’s crackdown on ride-hailing.

“In terms of enforcement of the bylaw, that is something that remains a responsibility of the city.”

Mayor Doug McCallum previously said any driver caught picking up a customer in his city will face fines of up to $500 with bylaw officers enforcing the rules.

it’s not clear if this is still his stance, considering McCallum supports a regional licence for ride-hailing, but with conditions. The Mayors’ Council endorsed the licence Friday and encouraged all municipalities to adopt it.

Uber has told its drivers not to pay any tickets received for driving in Surrey.
