Win and you’re in for Canadian women’s soccer team

CARSON, California (660 NEWS) — A victory over Costa Rica will secure a spot for Christine Sinclair and Canada at this summer’s Olympics in Japan.

The Canadians square off with their Central American rivals in the semi-final of the Concacaf Olympic qualifying tournament Friday at 5 p.m. MT.

In over a dozen meetings, Canada has never lost to Costa Rica, outscoring their opponents 45 to six. They last faced off in October 2018 at the Concacaf Women’s Championship. Canada won 3-1.

“They’re a quality team that we typically play every qualification tournament,” Sinclair said this week. “Both teams know each other pretty well. It’ll be a good game.”

It’s been an impressive showing for the Canadians at the Olympic qualifying competition, scoring 22 times and not conceding a goal.

“They [Costa Rica] have a few world-class players, and they really can change a game. I think we really need to shut them down and stay strong defensively and keep the clean sheets going,” defender Shelina Zadorsky offered of Friday’s semi-final.

Of course, the highlight of the tournament has been Sinclair, aka Captain Canada. Headlines around the world recognized the 36-year-old when she scored her 185th goal to break the international scoring record in Canada’s 11-0 victory over St. Kitts and Nevis 11-0 last Wednesday.
