Cat abandoned in Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Park rescued

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — When Lenara Emirova heard rustling from the bushes in Queen Elizabeth Park Saturday she never expected to find a young cat abandoned along with its carrier, a bag of pricey food, and a water dish.

“I heard something moving under the bushes. First I got scared and then – it was something white – so I realized it was not a raccoon or anything wild. I got closer and I noticed there was a little cat, sitting under the tree,” she says.

Her apartment doesn’t allow pets so she cajoled the cat back into the carrier, and took the frightened creature back to the restaurant where she works.

“The poor cat was super scared and wet,” she explains. “When they got it out of the cage they realized the cat is really sick. It’s covered in scratches and scars and wasn’t in healthy condition.”

The SPCA took the cat — which was identified as a male, and less than a year old — to an emergency vet.

One of Emirova’s coworkers has already named him Lucky because she found a red, Lucky Money envelope with a loonie in it under the cat’s blanket in the carrier.

Emirova will get an update on the kitty’s condition on Monday.

Meantime, she says she is still trying to figure out why someone would do such a thing.

“I didn’t want to leave it there because I felt so bad. I almost cried finding out someone had thrown away their pet like that. Even with the food, there are raccoons and coyotes in the park, they would easily eat this little thing.”
