NEW WESTMINSTER (CityNews) — It’s a pretty stinky mystery: Who has been tossing dog feces into a New Westminster garden?

Over a dozen bags of dog poo have been found stashed in a hedge at sports court in Connaught Heights, just steps away from a trash can.

New Westminster city workers took to Twitter Friday to ask: “What person could have perpetrated this poopy predicament?”

Martin Kovar is a gardener with the city.

“We had a full harvest of dog poo bags,” he tells CityNews. “We were just a little disheartened that dog owners in the area do not respect these spaces.”

This isn’t the first time this has happened. Workers scooped out another shocking haul of poop last spring.

The cleanup takes time away from workers who could be tending to other areas.

“We go in and carefully remove all the dog excrement and the bags before we can actually start working,” Kovar says.

“It’s very non hygienic. It’s just bad for our own health, for us keeping clean, and for everybody else who ventures close to these spots.”

City workers say improperly disposed of dog waste is a year-round issue.

Neighbours in the area also say they see way too much poop.

“It’s pretty frustrating,” says one woman. “This area honestly is really bad for that. I’m surprised to even see bags. Usually it’s just right on the street.”

“People should take responsibility,” says another area resident. “When they forget that, the whole community suffers.”

City workers say the proper place to dispose of dog droppings is in a garbage can–either in public or at home.

One man who lives in the area has some advice for disrespectful dog owners.

“Just pick it up man.”
