Hosting Olympics again comes with challenges, opportunities: Whistler mayor

WHISTLER (NEWS 1130) — If there was a Vancouver bid for the 2030 Olympics, Whistler’s mayor says his council would examine it closely.

Whistler Mayor Jack Crompton says the 2010 games left a lasting legacy in terms of facilities.

Crompton tells NEWS 1130 if there was a serious push to bring the Olympics back, it’s something Whistler would take a look at.

“Whistler was built on Olympic dreams,” he says. “It’s something that we have been talking about since the 1960s, and 2010 was an incredibly special time for our community to see.”

Crompton says before backing any potential bid, he’d want to see how the games would benefit Whistler and provide a lasting legacy in the way that the 2010 games did.

“An idea like this comes with both challenges and opportunities and both would need to be taken seriously if it this ever got to the point on an official bid.”

Ultimately, Crompton says he believes his community would be open-minded about playing a role in another Olympics.
