Trump basks in warm welcome on first official visit to India

AHMEDABAD, India (AP) – President Donald Trump has basked in India’s welcoming embrace during his first official visit to the subcontinent.

Trump arrived Monday on a trip that prioritized pageantry over policy.

The day opened with Trump addressing cheering crowds at a mega-rally and expressing mutual admiration with his counterpart, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The president and First Lady Melania Trump capped the day with a private, sunset tour of the grounds of the Taj Mahal.

Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are expected to delve into the substance on Tuesday, including discussions about trade between their nations, before Trump heads back to Washington.

As Trump was being feted by Modi on Monday, Hindu nationalist and communist groups held pro- and anti-U.S. street demonstrations in the capital, New Delhi.

A group of Hindu nationalists held a prayer meeting in which they put a vermilion mark on the forehead of Trump’s photograph, blessing him, and a priest chanted Hindu hymns wishing him success in his endeavour for strong ties with India.
