Pitt Meadows to vote on region-wide ride-hailing licence

PITT MEADOWS (NEWS 1130) – Pitt Meadows’ conspicuous absence from the list of cities allowing ride-hailing may be about to change, with council set to vote on the region-wide licence Tuesday.

Mayor Bill Dingwall says companies like Uber and Lyft are needed.

“If people are trying to get home from a night out, there’s just not enough taxis, and so I think ride-hailing, when it does get here, will be a welcomed addition to our community,” he said.

Dingwall Dingwall says all seven members of council support ride-hailing.

Uber and Lyft both announced an expansion of their networks on Monday, which included nearly all the Lower Mainland. Dingwall believes Uber and Lyft aren’t operating yet in cities like Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge because of a lack of drivers. Parts of Langley are also still without service.

“In our area, there’s significant demand,” Dingwall said. “The taxi company, try as they might, they just can’t meet the demand when it all comes at once.”

Dingwall says he hasn’t heard a target date for the companies to start operating in his community.
