Voting opens in Vancouver as Democrats Abroad primary starts

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — As Super Tuesday voting takes place in 14 U.S. states and the territory of American Samoa to decide who will go up against President Donald Trump, ex-pats can also start casting their vote.

The Democrats Abroad primary, for Democrats living outside the United States, starts Tuesday. Julie Boton from the Vancouver chapter stresses the importance of voting in the upcoming election.

“Canada and the U.S. share a unique relationship being next door neighbours. While U.S. policy has a worldwide effect, it’s particularly relevant to Canadians,” she says. “We encourage U.S. citizens and Canadians to be involved in our own communities, and our own politics, and understand the issues, to understand potential solutions to the problems we face both together and as separate counties.”

“We do a unique thing, which is, we hold a global primary, because all of the registered Democrats Abroad worldwide, we are counted as a state party at the Democratic National Convention,” says Boton.

Boton says the representation of Democrats Abroad delegates is important not only for choosing a presidential candidate, but also representing the interests of Americans living abroad for things like taxation.

“Based on how many people vote, we get a certain amount of delegates at the Democratic National Convention,” she says. “In 2016, for example, we had as many delegates as the state of Wyoming.”

Locally, voting takes place Tuesday night at the Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood Pub on Kingsway and on March 7 at the Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown.

Voting can also be done online.
