Vancouver police seize nine imitation firearms, ammunition near Oppenheimer Park

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Vancouver police seized weapons from a home close to Oppenheimer Park on Wednesday.

Just before 1 p.m., officers received information about a large number of weapons inside a suite in the area of Dunlevy and East Cordova streets.

After obtaining a search warrant, officers seized nine imitation firearms, ammunition, swords, hatchets, and several other suspected stolen items.

“More weapons have now been removed from the street,” Sgt. Aaron Roed said in a release. “We will continue to take steps to improve safety in the area for everyone.”

No arrests have been made and police continue to investigate.

It was the third time in nine days police have found weapons in or near the park, Roed said, raising concerns of public safety around the park.

Officers also seized weapons during an assault investigation in Oppenheimer Park on Wednesday, and while investigating a report of a domestic assault there on Feb. 27.

Items seized in total: nine imitation firearms; firearm parts, including barrels; 12-gauge shotgun shells; swords; knives; hatchets; handmade weapons; stun baton; bear spray;
BB pellets; and paintball rounds.

Earlier this week, Vancouver Police warned about continued violence at Oppenheimer Park after an assault and tent fire.

The park is home to dozens of homeless campers and has been a point of contention between local residents, the park board, and the city, which has tried to force people living there to move on.
