SFU student in isolation after parent contracts COVID-19

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – A student at Simon Fraser University is in self-isolation after possibly being exposed to COVID-19 by a parent.

The chair of the Burnaby school’s biology department, Isabelle Cote, said the student’s parents came back from an area of the world with a high number of infections.

One of the parents has been confirmed as having coronavirus, while the other is being assessed.

The department chair said the student, who attended a lab session on Mar. 3, was around their parents, but didn’t have physical contact.

That lab has since been through a deep clean, and classes are continuing as normal, Cote said.

She added department heads across the university met Tuesday about response plans. The main concern is finding ways to continue classes remotely if in-person sessions are cancelled.
