Justin Trudeau opts to self-isolate after wife develops flu-like symptoms

OTTAWA – Canada’s prime minister has opted to self-isolate after his wife developed flu-like symptoms late Wednesday night.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau is currently being tested for the COVID-19 virus. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, a doctor advised Justin Trudeau to self-monitor since he is not showing any symptoms. However, out of an abundance of caution, the PMO said Trudeau will be working from home until his wife’s test results come back.

The PMO noted that Grégoire Trudeau’s symptoms have subsided.

Due to the current COVID-19 outbreak, which was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on Wednesday, the in-person First Ministers Meeting has been postponed.

“The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister will speak with First Ministers over the phone to discuss our collective action to limit the spread of COVID-19 and keep Canadians safe,” the PMO said in a statement.

“We continue to base all our decisions on the best evidence, science, and advice from our highly trained medical professionals and pulic health officials to protect the wellbeing of Canadians and reduce the risks of COVID-19 to our country,” the release from the PMO continued. “As Canadians, we are fortunate the count on their sound guidance, and we thank them for their tremendous work.”

Canada has recorded more than 100 cases of COVID-19 since the outbreak began.

Meanwhile, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said on Thursday he was staying home as a precaution, adding he was “feeling unwell,” but that symptoms he has been showing are not consistent with COVID-19.

“I have been in contact with a doctor and they do not believe I have symptoms consistent with COVID19,” he said in a tweet. “But their advice is for me to limit contact with the public until I am feeling better.”
