Charge approved in fatal 2019 crash in Coquitlam that 13-year-old dead

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) – A 27-year-old man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash last year that left a 13-year-old girl dead in Coquitlam.

The crash happened at Mariner Way and Riverview Crescent on March 25, 2019. Three pedestrians were hit when a 2012 BMW crashed with a 2010 Dodge Charger, sending the BMW spinning into the group who were waiting at a crosswalk.

The young teen was taken to the hospital, but died of her injuries. A young boy — who was six at the time — was also hurt.

It’s the job of the police to do a thorough and impartial investigation, Corporal Michael McLaughlin with Coquitlam RCMP said. “This investigation included appeals for witnesses, video review, collecting and reviewing technical data, and a subsequent collision-reconstruction where we shut down the road. Police forwarded the results to the BC Prosecution Service for review, and ultimately this single charge was approved.”

Mounties say the 27-year-old driver has been charged with one count of driving without due care and attention.
