DELTA (NEWS 1130) — Delta Police are not pulling anyone over for driving their vehicle with more than one person and have not handed out any tickets for such a thing, the department said in a tweet, claiming these are just rumours.
A rumour is circulating that #DPD officers are pulling over vehicles with more than 1 person, checking the IDs and addresses of each passenger, and then apparently fining those people who are not from the same household for not practicing social distancing. pic.twitter.com/8Bpec1MGM6

The force took to social media to dispel any misinformation. They said they have not pulled anyone over to ensure social distancing amid the pandemic, noting officers don’t have the authority to even do so.
“This is not true. no tickets have been handed out for any such reasons here in Delta,” reads a tweet.
This is NOT true. No tickets have been handed out for any such reasons here in Delta. There is no provision or authority for police to do enforcement such as this.

While Delta Police are on the road, it is to enforce the Motor Vehicles Act, they said.
Our officers are continuing to enforce the Motor Vehicle Act. And that includes driving behaviour that contributes to crashes, such as distracted driving, speeding or running red lights. #DeltaPolice #ToServeAndProtect

Similar claims regarding police fines arose recently in Vancouver when a woman posted in a Facebook group recounting an experience of someone getting pulled over and fined for driving with a friend they didn’t live with.

Vancouver Police have since explained that never happen.
