VANCOUVER (CityNews) – Social distancing means more people are getting shaggier.

Social media is full of folks who are giving home barbering a try as hair salons remain closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hashtag #coronahaircut is making its way around Twitter, with images of home haircuts depicting varying degrees of success

Professional barber Matt Sacchitiello has some advice for trimming your own ‘do.

“Something with clippers might be a little bit easier rather than going in with scissors,” he said. “With clippers, you won’t tend to cut yourself or your ear or anything.”

Electric clippers sell for about $20 at most drug stores and comes with a set of attachments to guard length.

Sacchitiello suggests beginners use a longer guard.

“Start long and go short,” he said. “You can’t put it back on.”

But it will grow back, he assured, for most.

He also suggests using two mirrors and starting on the sides — not the back, or the top.

For more tips, there’s no shortage of online tutorial videos.

“That’s how a lot of us learned to barber, but going on YouTube and watching people cut hair,” Sacchitiello said.

“You can get some real barbers out of this.”
