Throw used masks, gloves in trash: Coquitlam mayor

By

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) — People are taking to social media to call out others tossing used gloves, and surgical masks on the ground including the mayor of Coquitlam.

Mayor Richard Stewart posted a message on Facebook threatening “selfish” litterers with a $10,000 fine.

“I’m fully prepared to talk to staff about seeing if we can levy a really hefty fine for this kind of horrible behaviour, we need to discourage it, we need people to understand how serious this is.

Stewart is calling people tossing out protective masks and gloves on the ground extremely “careless.”

“If you think the gloves have COVID-19 on them. Why would you leave them here? And if you don’t, then there’s no reason not to put them in the garbage bag in your car. From my perspective, it is either insensitive or ignorant, or more likely; it’s just plain selfish. ”

On Tuesday, a frustrated NEWS 1130 reported seeing masks and gloves discarded in Vancouver playgrounds and Stanley Park as well.
