Wimbledon defaults to COVID-19 in 2020

LONDON (NEWS 1130) — Neither the Venus Rosewater Dish nor Gentlemen’s Singles Trophy will be raised on Centre Court at Wimbledon this summer.

The All England Club and the Committee of Management of The Championships decided Wednesday that the 2020 Grand Slam event will be cancelled due to public health concerns linked to the coronavirus epidemic.

It is the first time since World War Two that the oldest tennis tournament in the world has been cancelled.

The 134th men’s and women’s tennis championship will instead be staged on the grass courts in London, England from June 28 to July 11 in 2021.

Simona Halep defeated Serena Williams to win the Ladies’ Singles tennis title at the 2019 Wimbledon championships, while Novak Djokovic defended his title by defeating Roger Federer in a match exceeding four hours to take the men’s 2019 title.
