City of Vancouver lays off about 1,500 workers due to COVID-19

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Nearly 1,500 people who work for the City of Vancouver have been laid off in the wake of municipal facilities being shut down due to the coronavirus.
In a statement, the city says these layoffs as “temporary workforce reductions.”

Workers will continue be paid for 42 days of work, and benefits will continue for three months.
“Community centres, theatres and libraries have been significantly impacted. This is a temporary situation exclusively due to the COVID pandemic,” the statement says.
Laid-off workers will be rehired for their positions when city services and facilities reopen.
