VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — One of the biggest professional cycling events in North America, which consists of nine races in the Lower Mainland, has been called off because of COVID-19.
Organizers of BC Superweek said the cancellation is precautionary to keep in line with health orders against large public gatherings and travel restrictions and movement in Canada.
“With the likelihood that measures related to COVID-19 will continue for the foreseeable future, we must act responsibly to protect the many people who come together for BC Superweek from being at risk,” said Mark Esrnsting, series director, in a release.
The event was to be held in July.
According to the release, the BC Superweek has more than $140,000 in prize money to be won with nine races spanning over ten days. It includes the Tour de Delta, New West Grand Prix, Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix, Giro di Burnaby, PoCo Grand Prix, and Tour de White Rock.
Next year’s event is planned for July 9-18, 2021.
