Number of Mission Institution inmate COVID-19 cases rises, another correctional officer tests positive

MISSION (NEWS 1130) — The number of COVID-19 cases in the Mission Institution has gone up again as 23 inmates have now tested positive, as well as a third correctional officer.

There are still 18 tests waiting for results and a total of 43 tests at Mission Institution so far.

A lone inmate who tested positive at Pacific Regional Treatment Centre in Abbotsford was initially at the prison in Mission after being moved to the medical facility.

On Thursday, two correctional officers from the same institution tested positive for COVID-19.

Mission is the only federal prison in B.C. where guards have been confirmed to have the virus, although more than 50 cases have been recorded at three facilities in Quebec and one at an institution in Ontario.

Earlier, an infectious disease doctor has already warned of an “explosive outbreak” at Mission Institution if more wasn’t done to contain the virus.
