Three more COVID-19 deaths in B.C., 35 confirmed cases announced

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — B.C. Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has reported three additional deaths and 35 more positive COVID-19 cases.

As of Saturday, the province has a total of 58 deaths and 1,445 confined cases.

Nine hundred five people in the province have recovered. And Henry says 63 people out of the 134 people hospitalized are in critical care.

She also urged residents to stay home for the long weekend and avoid “unnecessary travel.”

“We know these physical distancing measures are in place, and we know they’re so important to be able to continue the trend that we are having in managing this pandemic,” she says.

I want to say thank you for staying home and avoiding putting unnecessary strain on our small communities around the province. We want to make sure that we’re not taking services and support away from those who live locally, and need it.”

She added, the province has also implemented new returning traveller protocols at the international borders in B.C. as of Friday, where the requirement for an approved self-isolation plan is in place for all British Columbians returning.

“This is more about how we can support our fellow British Columbians and Canadians returning from other parts of the world right now, and making sure that they join us in our response to managing this pandemic and keeping our families and our communities safe here in British Columbia.”

During the weekend press conference, Henry added the province is working closely with federal counterparts to deal with a COVID-19 outbreak at a federal prison in Mission, B.C.
