Surrey RCMP investigating house fire

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — A fire at a house under construction Sunday in Surrey spread to three others.

Surrey RCMP is now investigating, along with the fire department.

Two homes were evacuated, while 80th Avenue was closed between 125th and 128th streets while 22 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

“Crews are just mopping up, the fire is contained and an investigating is pending,” said Surrey Assistant Fire Chief Ben Dirksen.

The cause of the fire is unknown, he added.

Pictures on social media showed a plume of smoke high in the air.

The started in an unoccupied house that was in the framing stage, Dirksen said.

“The fire did spread to a neighbouring house,” he added, damaged its roof.

It also caused minor damage to two other houses, Dirksen said.

No one was hurt in the fire. The two neighbouring homes that were evacuated will remain so, for now.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. To remain anonymous, contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.solvecrime.ca, quoting file No. 2020-54501.
