‘Faith restored in humanity’ for Vancouver Island couple offered free venue after wedding plans go awry

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — As many impending nuptials are put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic putting a stop to gatherings and venues, there’s a silver lining for a couple on Vancouver Island.

Elizabeth Brewin and her fiancé  are likely out $5,000 after their June reception was cancelled at Merridale Cidery in Cobble Hill, but then came an offer to give them a new venue.

“Honestly I was just surprised for someone to come out with an offer that’s so generous. It’s just nice. It kind of restores your faith in humanity,” she says.

After hearing about Brewin’s story on NEWS 1130, Kevin D’Costa, quickly offered up his own place near Nanaimo free of charge.

“It is magic. If they do decide they’d like a lakeside wedding and something intimate, then they’re welcome to come here,” he says.

As an Airbnb host, D’Costa is no stranger to hospitality and says he’s happy to help.

“I love meeting people so this was just one more avenue for me to do something meaningful and purposeful,” he tells NEWS 1130.

While there haven’t been any promises yet, Brewin says they’re flattered by the offer.

“His property looks beautiful. So we would definitely love to host our wedding there once all this has blown over,” she says.

If Brewin decides to take up D’Costa on his offer, this will be the first wedding on D’Costa’s property.
