Roads quiet as 35th annual Sun Run doesn’t go ahead

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — If it wasn’t for the pandemic, thousands of people would be running around Vancouver Sunday morning.

The Sun Run was set for April 19, but organizers had to call it off last month as restrictions started to come into effect.

When the event was cancelled, Sun Run spokesperson, Tim Hopkins, called it “heartbreaking” for all involved and said the decision was difficult.

“We’re moving forward with something that we never imagined at the start of this year, and the start of our planning,” Hopkins explained at the time.

“We’ve been working countless hours over the last couple of weeks on our COVID-19 policy and how we can move forward as an event. At this point, with everything going on in North America and around the world, we have not been given the possibility of postponing.”

About 33,000 people were registered, although no one is getting a refund because organizers already incurred significant costs. They say the best they can offer is a discount for next year.

Runners will be able to defer participation to 2021 for a $15 fee.
