How expecting mothers can minimize stress during COVID

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The prospect of going to a hospital during a time of a pandemic is surely weighing on the minds of people who are expecting.

As physical distancing rules are in place, Nirmala Raniga, with the Chopra Addiction and Wellness Center, says people who are pregnant need to make sure they’re doing everything possible to ease their anxiety levels.

“Stay connected virtually with family and friends who love you every day. That [can] really helped the mother to be to get through this,” she says, adding diet plays an important role too.

Since there already is enough stress when someone is pregnant under ideal circumstances, a lack of family support in many cases can only add to that weight.

“The same family system, I understand, you can be in the same space without that six-feet rule, what I mean is a gentle massage, or sitting in the bathtub and relaxing yourself. These are different tools that a mother-to-be can use to ground herself,” she says.

Raniga adds it’s also essential to keep a strong line of communication with your health care provider, especially if you develop symptoms of COVID-19.

“If they remain calm. If they remain centred, then the baby will also feel that. Listening to music, going for a walk in nature, making sure you get the restful sleep.”
