Zipcar latest car-share service to leave Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Another car-share company is departing the province, leaving people in Metro Vancouver, Whistler, the Interior and Victoria with one less choice to get around.

Zipcar announced Tuesday in an email to members that it is pulling out of the province entirely at the end of this month.

The Boston-based company cited the “complexities” of operating in the province, including local insurance regulations, as one of the reasons.

In the notice, Zipcar says customers can still use their memberships in other locations and it will continue operating in cities across North America.

Zipcar, which is owned by car rental company Avis Budget Group Inc., came to B.C. in 2007.

The company could not immediately be reached for comment.

In February, Share Now — formerly Car2Go — ended operations across North America.

Afterward, Evo announced it would add 250 new cars to its fleet in April.
