Thousands of essential workers matched with child care in B.C.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Thousands of frontline workers in B.C. have been connected to child care programs through the province’s matching service.

As many daycares remain closed during the pandemic, police, firefighters, and healthcare professionals have been able to access licensed child care centres for their kids up to the age of five.

More than 2,650 front line workers have been referred through its new system since it started less than a month ago, according to the province.

The provincial government has spent about $38-million, but it has resulted in more than 2,500 childcare centres staying open during the COVID-19 crisis.

For essential workers with children over the age of five, the province says they’ve been working with school districts to make space available for kids during regular school hours and access to care before and after school hours.
