Suspect identified in racially motivated attack on senior in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A suspect has been identified in the racially motivated assault of a 92-year-old man with dementia, according to Vancouver Police.

The suspect has not been charged, but Cst. Tania Visintin said he is known to police.

The attack occurred inside a convenience store along Nanaimo Street and East 1st Avenue on March 13, when someone yelled racist remarks at the man, including comments about COVID-19.

Once outside, police said the suspect shoved the senior, causing him to fall down and hit his head.

The suspect was gone by the time police arrived.

Vancouver Police investigators received numerous tips from the community on the assault, which led to a suspect being identified.

In recent weeks, the VPD says it is seeing more cases like this — 11 hate crimes were reported in March, with almost half of them reported as anti-Asian.
