Former Blue Jays ace Ricky Romero pitches in with team’s food bank fundraiser

TORONTO (NEWS 1130) — Canada’s only Major League Baseball team is stepping up to the plate to help those struggling to put food on the table amid the pandemic.

From Home Plate To Your Plate is a virtual food drive, hoping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Canadian food banks.

Ricky Romero, former starting pitcher and current Vancouver Canadians broadcaster, tells NEWS 1130 many current and former members of the organization giving their time and money to the cause.

“When they asked me to be a part of it I thought it was really cool. I know I’ve donated. It’s such a tight community amongst the players and the alumni. We know what we represent as players and when something like this happens you see everyone gather up together,” he says.

“It’s important for us to be able to take care of the people that have supported the Toronto Blue Jays every season. The whole country roots you on and I think it’s important for us to be able to give back”

Romero says the goal is to raise as much money as possible for Food Banks Canada. Jays Care and The Sprott Foundation are matching the first $300,000 raised.

He says this initiative is close to his heart as he remembers how much the country embraced him during his time in Toronto.

“Me having the special tie that I do to the country of Canada, it’s really important to me. And obviously with my wife being Canadian it’s even more important.”

Donations can be made online.
