Woman left with bloody nose, swollen face after random SkyTrain assault

Do you know this man wanted for an alleged attack on a Skytrain? Isabelle Raghem has the disturbing details.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Left with a bloody nose and swollen face, a young woman is recovering after being attacked on the SkyTrain over the weekend.

The alleged assault happened on Saturday around 7:50 a.m. shortly after the woman got on the train at Waterfront Station.

She noticed a man looking her way, so she asked if something was wrong.

This is when the man apparently came up to her and said something along the lines of, “You people are why my daughter is sick,” and, without warning, he grabbed her bag and punched her in the face multiple times, according to Transit Police.

Sgt. Clint Hampton says the suspect also grabbed her hair, violently slammed her face into the SkyTrain seats, and pushed her out at Burrard Station while also grabbing the woman’s cellphone.

“She had a cut above her eye, bloody nose and pretty significant swelling to her face,” Hampton says.

“Fortunately, I guess, the injuries could have been a lot worse than what they are, but as you can imagine anybody who goes through an incident like this, this is very traumatic for her.”

After she was pushed out of the train, the woman started yelling for help, police explain.

They say two people came over and were able to get her bag back from the man, but he threw her cellphone against a wall breaking it.

The man stayed on the train until he eventually got off at King George Station, Hampton says.

He adds the woman called the police once she returned home.

Hampton says they were able to get good images of the suspect who is described as a South Asian male, 40-50 years old, around 5’5”- 5’7”, with a medium build, with a salt-and-pepper beard. At the time, he was wearing a black jacket, a green hoody, and blue jeans.

“I am very confident that when the public views these images, if a person knows who this person is, they’re going to recognize him in the photos and hopefully they’ll be in touch with Metro Vancouver Transit Police,” Hampton says.

As for the man’s comments towards the woman, Hampton says it is difficult to know what the man meant, and that will be part of the investigation.
