Quarantine cooking has taken a life of its own

MONTREAL (CITYNEWS) – During the COVID-19 pandemic, many have started cooking and baking and turning to social media to share their masterpiece in the comfort of their kitchen.

“I always say it’s your dish. You gotta try as many times as you want in your kitchen for you to find that proper recipe,” explained Sandro Mauro, from Cooking with Sandro.

Like many of us, Mauro was sitting at home watching television, bored, until he decided to one night pick up some chocolate chip cookies, ask his friends on social media what their favourite cookie was, and start a live debate poll. Then, he went from teaching people how to make coffee to owning his own live cooking show on social media 55 days later.

Now, Mauro is being viewed all over the world. One of his videos on making the American burger with truffle fries has reached 17,000 views on his social media accounts.

With the help of his sponsors, he’s donated 30 lunchboxes of food to frontline workers at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Cote-St-Luc.

“When you start seeing everybody doing that for the front-liners you know you have to be a part of it. It’s nice to do that gesture and when the whole, cause cooking with Sandro is a whole team, cause without them it doesn’t work.”

Mauro isn’t the only one finding joy through cooking during the pandemic.

Remi Bourget, a commercial litigation lawyer, says it’s become a family activity every Friday night only using ingredients he has in the fridge.

“Basically, they have to empty their fridge. I started the hashtag COVID ton frido the wordplay with COVID and empty your fridge. Basically, to get people to get creative.”

Many viewers have sent CityNews their masterpieces online stating that family meals are making a comeback.

Mauro says the only way to cook is to, “make love to your food. And if you cannot make love to your food, then there’s a problem. You’re not enjoying what you’re doing. And the end result is going to show.”
