Bonny’s Taxi approved as ride-hailing service

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Bonny’s Taxi can now operate as a ride-hailing service, which allows the Burnaby-based company to pick up passengers anywhere in Metro Vancouver.

However, Carolyn Bauer with the Vancouver Taxi Association says this doesn’t mean all cab companies will start to expand.

“If everybody comes into Vancouver, who is going to service Surrey and Coquitlam?” she asks, saying this used to be an issue on weekends nights.

Bauer says taxi boundaries are there for a reason.

“We’ve always been the ones strong about protecting the boundaries and keeping the boundaries so that the customers in each municipality are being serviced,” she says.

Yellow Cab, based in Vancouver, has also applied for a ride-hailing license, although the company says it has no plans to expand into the suburbs.

“We would not have enough vehicles with no guarantee of service time and our business has been built in Vancouver that’s our base and where our customer and business in,” she says.

Bauer says the main reason to apply for a ride-hailing license is taxi companies can legally operate a payment app in BC.
