The baby was in hospital and doing well, RCMP says

COQUITLAM (NEWS 1130) — Coquitlam RCMP believes it has identified the mother of a baby found abandoned Saturday in a residential neighbourhood.

The baby was found outside a home in Port Coquitlam, according to police.

“Everyone involved in the file is now getting medical care and community care support as the police investigation moves into the next phase,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin says in a release.

Coquitlam RCMP was called near Nicola Place and Ranger Lane at 12:50 p.m. Saturday.

The baby was receiving medical care in hospital and doing well, police said then.

Last month, the body of a baby was found inside a portable washroom on the Downtown Eastside.

Janice Abbott, with the Atira Women’s Resource Society, said regarding the latter, no one should be rushing to judge the mother. Abbott said there are many reasons a woman would not feel comfortable going to a hospital to give birth or seek medical support.
