VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — In honour of the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope, Adidas is releasing a replica of the shoes he wore on his legendary journey

Terry’s brother, Fred Fox, says it’s amazing to see Terry’s story being told, 40 years after the journey.

“It brings back a lot of memories. We still, as a family, we still have Terry’s pair of shoes he wore during the Marathon of Hope. To see the replica shoes come out is pretty amazing,” he says.

“Kids today, who obviously weren’t born 40 years ago when Terry was running the Marathon of Hope, learn about Terry at school, and hear from their grandparents and parents who witnessed Terry firsthand,” he says.

The blue sneakers and an anniversary T-shirt will go on sale Wednesday with net proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Fred says it’s still as important as it was 40 years ago to raise money for cancer research.

“That’s the mandate of the Terry Fox Foundation. That was Terry’s mission when he was running across Canada and it goes to fund the best, most innovative cancer research in Canada, in the world,” he says, adding, to date, more than $800 million has been raised for the foundation.

Before embarking on his cross-country run, Fred says, Terry reached out to organizations for donations. One of them was Adidas that provided Terry with running shoes.

In 2005, Adidas did a replica shoe for the 25th anniversary of the Marathon of Hope.
