West End residents frustrated, tired after ‘horrific’ light display floods units overnight

Blinded by a very huge light. Safeway has officially re-opened on Davie Street in Vancouver’s West End. However, the re-opening has left neighbours angry and tired, as a new art display lit up peoples’ apartments all night long. Ashley Burr has more.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Some residents of Vancouver’s West End found themselves blinded by a very bright, very green light Wednesday night.

Perplexed people living in the area’s highrises took to social media to question what was responsible for the garish glow.

The source of the light was actually an art display.

The old single-storey Safeway at Davie Street and Cardero Street closed in 2017.

The new Safeway is on the ground floor of a development that spans a city block and includes two 20-storey towers.

Annette Moidl lives on the 13th floor of a building across the street.

“Our blinds didn’t do anything, it went straight through. So we had a pretty rough sleep last night,” she says.

“I think celebrations it would be really great to have that, like Pride, that’d be a huge one right, on Davie Street. It would be awesome, just not all the time.”

According to Safeway having the lights on 24/7 is not part of the plan.

“We’re certainly going to have to make some adjustments, and we’ll certainly be very receptive to the community response to that and work with our neighbours,” says Steve Hodgeweide, store manager.

“Maybe it would be advisable to dim it or turn it down in the evening hours for the benefit of the residents.”

The lights are only supposed to be on when the store is open, between 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
