Golden Retriever missing after being swept downriver at Lynn Canyon

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A family has lost a beloved pet while hiking at Lynn Canyon Saturday.

The 9-year old Golden Retriever, named Maya, was playing in the water when she was swept downriver near the suspension bridge.

Firefighters and park rangers searched the water for the dog, but could not find her.

A picture posted social media shows crews going into the water just past the falls.

“There were three park rangers on scene. One had hiked up from the highway looking for Maya,” says North Vancouver District Assistant Fire Chief Jeremy Duncan.

Anyone in the park who sees Maya is being asked to call the fire department.

Duncan says the upsetting incident can serve as a reminder.

“Everybody’s out and about enjoying the outdoors right now. But the rivers are high right now, they’re flowing quite strong,” he explains.

“I’d just suggest when you’re going out hiking to stick to the trails, stay away from river’s edge People just have to remember it is nature, and water’s very powerful and, like I said, it’s running very strong right now.”

Duncan says the park is busy, but rangers are keeping an eye on things to make sure public health advice is followed.

“They’re doing a great job patrolling the area, talking about social distancing and safety. There’s just an unusually large amount of people out on the trails this time because it’s somewhere where they can enjoy some social interaction with some social distancing.”
