VPD arrests man after car with 2 women has windows smashed in Chinatown

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A man was arrested Saturday in Vancouver after smashing the window of a vehicle parked in Chinatown with two Asian women inside, according to Vancouver police.

The women were confronted by the man after parking their car near East Pender and Columbia streets, police says.

He yelled obscenities at them, then smashed a window with a chisel he was carrying in a bag, police adds.

Police were called and officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect, with the help of a witness.

“This was a random, unprovoked incident and would have been very terrifying for the victims,” Sgt. Aaron Roed says in a release.

“It was particularly concerning for responding officers, considering the anti-Asian crime and incidents we have seen in Vancouver recently.”

On Friday, the Vancouver Police Department reported a “staggering” increase in the number of hate-related and anti-Asian crimes in Vancouver to date this year.

According to police, there were 77 hate-related police files opened in the city as of Friday, up from 51 over the same time in 2019.

The man arrested Saturday was released and will appear in court at a later date.
