Vancouver Canadians preparing for move to full baseball season

VANCOUVER (NEW 1130) — Fans could see almost twice as many baseball games at Nat Bailey Stadium when the Vancouver Canadians resume play.

Andy Dunn, president of the Vancouver Canadians, isn’t sure when the Class A short-season affiliate will resume play, this season or next.

But when it does, the Vancouver franchise could be moving up a tier and play a full-season schedule as minor league teams across North America could fold.

More than a third of minor league baseball teams don’t think they’ll recover from the pandemic, according to a report by Sports Illustrated.

If so, the Canadians could move to a schedule with 70 home games from 38.

“We’re in great shape,” Dunn said. “We’re just trying to figure out what the next step is so we can announce, one, what this season looks like in 2020, but then have an annoucement based on what we’re going to look like in 2021.”

He added the Northwest League team was getting ready for a change even before the pandemic.

The Canadians last played a full season in 1999, when they won the Pacific Coast League AAA title.
