Man dies after suffering ‘serious injuries’ while being arrested for stealing a cab in Delta: IIO

DELTA (NEWS 1130) — A man is dead after police responded to a report that he stole a taxi from the Tsawassen Ferry Terminal Friday night and the province’s police watchdog has been called in.
According to the Delta Police Department, officers were called to the causeway at 11:35 p.m. where the man was fleeing in a stolen cab.
“The driver of this vehicle then exited the taxi, and engaged with police. Other officers responded to the scene as well,” reads a release from Delta police.
“An interaction between officers and the individual took place, with the individual allegedly producing weapons.”
According to the Independent Investigations Office the man was then arrested.
“During the course of his arrest, the man suffered serious injuries,” reads a release from the IIO.
“Emergency Health Services were called, and the man was transported to hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.”

The IIO wants any witnesses to phone their witness line at 1-855-446-8477.
The independent agency is called in to all “officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.”
The BC Coroners Service is also investigating the man’s death.
No police officers were injured.
