NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Since players can’t face-off on the ice, a private minor hockey association in North Vancouver will host an e-sports tournament this weekend to help raise money for the club hurt by the pandemic.
The North Shore Winter Club Minor Hockey Association is partnering with Webedia to offer an NHL 2020 e-sports tournament on Saturday.
Competitors will play NHL 2020 games to compete for bragging rights, with half the proceeds going towards minor hockey development for the club’s teams and players.
“Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are unable to host our annual golf tournament and road hockey tournament, so the money raised from this e-sports tournament will be timely,” the club says in a release.
Well this is creative!
They can’t have an actual face-to-face hockey tourney, so the North Shore Winter Club Minor Hockey Association is putting on an 2020 eSports tournament. 1/2 of the money will go toward minor hockey development for their teams & players. Happening June 5-6. pic.twitter.com/HGSMh0lMlY

“If you’ve been following the NHL and other professional sports league during this hiatus from sports, you are likely aware that all hosted e-sports tournaments with their players. These events are designed to be fun and a great way to maintain comradery at a distance.”
The e-sports tournament is open to members and non-members and the winner of each division — under-12, under-18 and over-18 — will get a free week at a NSWC hockey school of their choice.
Registration closes at 6 p.m. Thursday.
