MLS is announcing a tournament involving all teams including the Vancouver Whitecaps held in Orlando

It's unclear how teams will deal with the border closure and there is no date to resume the regular season

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The Vancouver Whitecaps could still play games at BC Place this season.

Major League Soccer is returning to play with an exhibition tournament in Orlando next month with all 26 teams. Once the tournament is over, teams are supposed to go back to their home cities to continue playing.

But Sportsnet 650 host Dan Riccio says it’s unclear how MLS will deal with the border closure since anyone entering Canada is required to quarantine for 14 days.

“The NHL, MLS, all these leagues are trying to figure out how that works,” he says. “But as of right now, MLS regular season is still on pause. They are just focussed on this tournament, and some of these other things are what they are going to have to start working out now if they are actually played out the rest of this regular season and award the MLS cup later this year.”

So Riccio advises sports fans not to get excited just yet.

“MLS has not talked at all about what the regular season looks like beyond this tournament, and for a league like they are, they need fans in the stands to have an expense economically. I don’t know how close we really are to getting back to having fans in the stands at sporting events.”

The tournament begins July 8 and will last just over a month, but they’re still isn’t a set date to resume the regular season.
