‘Devastating’ for the kids, says principal after Delta playground burned over the weekend

DELTA (NEWS 1130) — It’s a big blow for the school and surrounding community, says the principal of an elementary school after its playground burned to the ground over the weekend.

Mark Douangchanh says he suspects vandalism was behind the melted blue plastic and toppled bars left laying on the ground at Beach Grove Elementary School.

“It’s quite devastating in the sense of kids love the playground,” he says. “To have a structure that gives them an activity to do outside to fall into ruin like is really hurtful.”

Delta Police are investigating, but Douangchanh says he’s still feeling a sense of sadness.

“I’m thinking about the kids who use the playground all the time, and how much fun and laughter they have,” the principal says. “To see something like that is taken away for a time until we get a chance to rebuild, it’s pretty hard.”

There was already a fundraising effort for a new playground, though Douangchanh says this has changed the situation.

“We were planning to work with the school district in this city to install a new playground soon, but then this came up and launches a whole new scenario we have to work with.”

He says the school is working with its insurance company on trying to rebuild the playground as quickly as possible.
