Vancouver burger restaurant Trans Am closing its doors

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — It’s a sad day for fans of Trans Am Restaurant in East Vancouver. The retro bar, known for its burgers and cocktails, announced on Sunday it will be shutting its doors.

“There’s no easy way to say this, but unfortunately the Trans Am machine is done,” said owner Gianmarco Colannino in an emotional Instagram video

The 13-seat burger joint won Vancouver Magazine’s Bar of the Year award in February. Colannino made sure to encourage a unique social atmosphere with vinyl records playing and a no-phone policy.

Like many restaurants, COVID-19 forced Trans Am to shift to a take-out only menu.

“Unfortunately, with the way things are going, this concept just doesn’t work right now,” writes Colannino on Instagram.

The owner added he hopes to be back in the future.

“The way I see it though, it’s like a book. I mean, this was the first chapter and we’re going to be moving onto the second chapter.”

“We may be down, but we’re not out.”

Colannino took the time to thank the city and Trans Am’s patrons, adding, “The amount of support we’ve received from you has been beyond anything I could have imagined.”
