Police safely detonate ‘improvised explosive device’ in downtown Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Police say they have safely detonated an improvised explosive device in downtown Vancouver.

Officers found the device in a backpack during an arrest after two men were caught allegedly trying to break into a vehicle near Thurlow and Bute streets Tuesday.

The area near Burrard and Pender streets was blocked off and specialists from the Vancouver Police Department’s Emergency Response Section came in to detonate the device.

“Officers were able to safely detonate the explosive with no harm to the public or the surrounding structures,” says Const. Tania Visintin. “Given the time of day, the area was heavily populated. Our officers worked meticulously to ensure no one was put at risk.”

A 39-year-old man was arrested.

While charges in relation to the initial attempted break-in have been recommended, police say they anticipate other charges connected to the improvised explosive device.
