19 new COVID-19 cases in B.C., two new health-care facility outbreaks

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — The province announced 19 new COVID-19 cases in B.C. on Wednesday, as well as two new health-care facility outbreaks.

The outbreaks are at Mission Memorial Hospital and Tabor Home in Abbotsford, according to a statement from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix.

The outbreak at Tabor Home, an assisted and independent living facility, is tied to Mission Hospital, as is yesterday’s outbreak at the Maple Hill long-term care home.

“These recent health-care outbreaks are very concerning and clearly demonstrate that COVID-19 remains in our communities,” Henry and Dix say.

“Mission Memorial is a small hospital, which means services for the local community are now limited to urgent and emergency care only,” they add.

“Public health teams are working hard to contain further spread. While we are monitoring the situation closely, we are hopeful that we have caught these outbreaks in the early stages.”

A resident of Tabor Home tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Fraser Health Authority.

A resident also tested positive at Maple Hill, a long-term care facility owned and operated by Fraser Health.

Seven health-care facilities continue to have active outbreaks.

Meanwhile, the outbreak at the Oppenheimer Group, a produce distributor in Coquitlam, has been declared over.

The province also recorded no new deaths related to the pandemic for the fifth straight day, with the total remaining at 168.

B.C. has 185 active COVID-19 cases, with 11 people in hospital, including five in intensive care.

The recovery rate in B.C. dipped slightly to 87 per cent.

Cases by health region since the start of the pandemic: 946 in Vancouver Coastal; 1,438 in Fraser; 130 on the Island; 196 in the Interior; and 65 in Northern.
