Hikers, nature lovers urged to be careful of ticks returning to trails

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — As the weather warms up, many British Columbians are eager to hit the hiking trails, but the Nature Conservancy of Canada is warning hikers of ticks.

According to Andrew Holland, with the conservancy, ticks are becoming more common in Canada.

“2009, there were just over 140 cases reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada. Three years ago there was over 2000 cases,” Holland says.

The little bugs get on your clothes while you’re hiking and can carry Lyme Disease which can lead to neurological problems if it’s not treated early enough.

While there are different kinds of ticks, Holland adds, “the Blackleg Attack or the Deer Tick is the one that’s been expanding in around Canada.”

Hikers are especially vulnerable of picking up ticks as they walk in grassy or wooded areas. But even golfers can brush up against them.

“One of the things people can do to protect themselves is wear mosquito spray or bug repellent with DEET in it. It’s also a good idea to wear long sleeves and pants and to keep loose clothing tucked in,” Holland advises.
